Sunday 3rd December saw the Optiven FC put to the test for their first friendly match by Kikuyu Legends FC that saw them come on top. The game was a fitness and coordination check to test the team that has been training for slightly over a month now. Utafiti Green Stadium, 7000 above sea level was the stage set for the two teams as the grove of trees and beautiful atmosphere gave a nice deserving touch to the game.
The away game meant Optiven FC wore the red bibs and at 1pm the game kicked off. The two teams set off at a good pace before Kikuyu Legends conceded a first penalty thanks to some good feet by Jeremiah Lechipai and Joseph Mathenge took the spot but failed to convert.
The game continued at 0-0 and Optiven FC’s persistence saw them win another penalty and this time Joseph converted the penalty home to lead 1-0. The change score brought intensity to the other team and a good team play saw them equalise just before the half break.
DM Mwangi and John Odede took the mantle at half time to advise the team on the next half “We’re still in this. We’ll not dwell in that half but we got another come up. Let us remember why we started this and what we aim to achieve. One team, one goal,” John Odede stated.
The second half was a do or die and it came with few substitutions which brought new energy on the pitch. There were chances on both sides that the attackers were unable to find their footing until Silas Njuki let a 35 yard lob which ensured Optiven FC clinched their first ever friendly win. The match went on to conclude at 1-2 in favour of Optiven and a testimony to the training done weekly on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.
“I want to acknowledge everyone of you that showed up today and ensured we fought to the end for this win. A first win gives us more confidence and I want to also recognise our directors for trusting and supporting Optiven FC. This is the first of many and more is yet to come,” Daniel team coordinator.
