Optiven FC, the upstart football team formed as a staff empowerment initiative by Optiven Group, pulled off a massive upset over the weekend by defeating media giants Nation FC in an entertaining friendly match. The highly-anticipated clash between the two corporate sides took place at the Gikambura Stadium on Saturday 9th March, with Optiven FC emerging 4-1 winners after a hard-fought 90 minutes.
John Nyongesa scored a first-half goal to give Optiven FC a 1-0 lead at the break, before Nation FC hit back with a goal of their own early in the second period to level the scores. But it was Optiven FC who had the final say, with John Nyongesa firing home another goal before the second half substitute Elijah scoring 2 of his own to send the real estate side’s fans into raptures.
“We are extremely proud of our players and efforts on the pitch,” said Optiven FC Team Manager Daniel Kariuki after the match. “This demonstrates the talent and teamwork present across our entire organization.”
It was a sobering result for Nation FC, who had been expected to brush aside their inexperienced opponents. However, the media side simply had no answer to Optiven’s energetic fans and clinical finishing on the day. The win is undoubtedly the biggest result yet for Optiven FC since the team was established in late 2023 with the aim of promoting physical fitness, teamwork and bonding among Optiven Group’s staff members.
Under the guidance of Martin Waweru Group HR, Administration and Talent Development Manager, who has instilled a winning mentality and professionalism in the squad, Optiven FC has quickly developed into a competitive force capable of punching above their weight class.
“We believe in empowering our staff not only within the confines of the workplace but also on the field of play. This initiative not only promotes physical fitness and teamwork but also instills a sense of pride and belonging among our employees, he remarked.”
This famous victory over the more fancied Nation FC side will certainly raise our Optiven FC’s profile, but more importantly, it has demonstrated the positive impact the initiative has had in uniting employees across different company departments and bringing out their competitive spirit.
The stunning giant-killing act has also set the stage perfectly for the reverse fixture later this year, which is sure to be another lively initiative for the power of football in bringing people together.
